Champions in Healthcare

Council on Aging of Elkhart County has served the aging and disabled community with a mission to provide programs which foster wellness, dignity, independence, and quality of life.  Each program offers supplemental services which offset deficiencies inherently occurring during the aging process, allowing for assistance in accomplishing the functional tasks required to sustain the necessities of daily living.  In response to community needs-based surveys, our programs consist of:

  • Transportation

  • In Home Care

  • COA Activity Center

  • Medicare Counseling and Enrollmnet

  • Medical Savings Plan

  • Tax Preparation

  • Resource Library (online and in person)

  • Meal Distribution (starting in 2026)

Removing Barriers

There are numerous barriers preventing our clients from accessing resources necessary for their quality of life. Our organization’s vision is to eliminate these barriers, ensuring every individual is restored the ability to visit the doctor for healthcare, purchase prescriptions for healing, increase buying power to afford housing and utilities, obtain consistent nutritional meals, rest in clean linens, and explore friendships to avoid loneliness.

For 98% of those we serve, inadequate income is the greatest barrier, aggravated by an inability to absolve the physical limitations which prevent employment and opportunity to improve their financial security.  By contracting with insurance providers, writing grants, and partnering with donors, we have established financial resources available to those accessing our services.

Donations supplement the client’s unpaid balance after insurance and grants are applied, as well as offer the only financial assistance available to those who do not have qualifying insurance or cannot satisfy stringent grant requirements. This fiscal year, $255,000 in donations will be needed to meet projected demand for services.

Our Partners

Council on Aging partners with health care providers throughout the region, including skilled care and rehabilitation campuses, wound care, orthopedics, therapy, fire and rescue, dental, vision, hospitals and their network providers.  The consolidated effort and commitment to client accessibility have allowed health care providers to experience:

  • Reliable support services for their patients

  • Decreased cancellations

  • Improved opportunity for patient commitment to care plans

  • Decreased re-admissions

According to Indiana statistics, the aging population in Elkhart County is rapidly growing, the 3rd largest population in the state for counties with established aging service centers.  Between 2024 and 2034 this demographic will be the driver for all new household growth. However, our county is the 2nd lowest in established funding resources to serve this sector.

We invite you to join us in service to the aging community by becoming a partner and Champion in Healthcare.  Consider the following:

$250               One week transport to physical therapy

$500               Cleaning and home safety for one month

$1,000            Two weeks of transport to cancer treatment

$5,000            One year of grocery shopping and meal preparation

$10,000          Ten months of transport to dialysis treatment

COA Care Fund

The Council on Aging of Elkhart County, along with the generosity of numerous local organizations, developed the COA Care Fund to eliminate transportation barriers that prevent access to services and goods necessary to maintain wellness.
A lack of insurance coverage or alternative financial resources often inhibit access to medical care, pharmacy, and nutritional supplies. For those under the age of 60 years, the barriers increase due to an even greater shortage of resources. The COA Care Fund focuses on resolving these issues by ensuring discounted transportation services are available.
This fund is 100% funded by donations. We are grateful for our partnership with the following organizations who have assisted in its development: 1st Source Bank, Goshen Health, the Elkhart Chamber of Commerce, Thor Motor Coach, SpartanNash, Horizon Bank, OSMC, Interra Credit Union, Tri Kappa Alpha Rho Chapter of Elkhart, and Elkhart Rotary!
